Amine overdose

Year 3 - Vol lost track...

Yup, I meant to write it that way.. but while I havent posted in a while, I've seen something that is a bit sad: Anime.

I've seen too much of it.. it's everywhere.. and worst of all, despite some veeeeeery little changes in style, it's pretty much the same. Why?

Well for one, it's anime.. it's everywhere.. it can be drawn by John or Jane doe and, for some reason, work it's way up any board as 'good looking'

Ohyes, it CAN look nice.. but where is the artist in there? Where is the personal touch, personal style?
The Angle? Come on.. just a still frame from any show with different characters can do that. The eyes? Clamp has a popular style but that's not what is usually poppin up for general Anime fans.

The list can go on.

Naruto, Inuyasha, Dragonball and the rest.. I've been a fan of shows before, I understand the need to draw the same thing over and over and over and I'm ok with it, but I actually got OUT of that and made my own style while learning more about others. When you draw anime, you don't show that you know how to draw.. no, you don't.. you show that you CAN USE A STYLE VERY WELL. But you're not showing yourself in it.. you're not being you.

Yes, you can color very well in it though.. I have seen colorful masterpieces.. but even so, it was imitating what was done.

use those color skills and draw something of your own.. invent eyes and hands.. or at least TRY. Because Anime, I'm just really sick and tired of seeing it everywhere, stealing talent like cigarette steals health.

Or if you want Japanese stuff, try Monkey punch.. or Ghibli.. that style is different.. eyes and body proportions have their own things to say.. but then again, you'd be copying another style.

god I needed that Rant..

Enjoy your creativity.

What I believe is, if somebody feels overwhelmed by the amount of a particular style and it feels boring, it means the message wasn't strong enough in those pieces for the viewer to appreciate it as a whole. What Ghibli, Monkey Punch and even Satoshi Kon do is that their message has such a strong power that it makes you care of what they do instead of how they draw it. Even if it's a "particular style," you know which one is which because they are not afraid to be who they are and what they have to say in their pieces.

I don't think you are the only one either. I have seen more and more readers wanted something different instead of feeling bored because they got used to a style. It's time to take it to the other level too :).

Thank you :)

Yes, Monkey Punch, Ghibli, Satoshi are, I beleive, good examples of people getting out out the 'mold' that some lucky people managed to push out as 'good'... they were not afraid of showing themselves and their styles and stood out..

Granted it's not easy, but eventually, with practice, you can get where you want or at the very least get better :)

I love Monkey Punch's style. :D [Even though I've never read any of his stuff.. heh]

Anyway, I think you're right about this stuff. It's hard to find someone being original with anime. :C
not just 'original with anime'.. it's hard to find artists that are being themselves and adapted or created a style of their own.

You can draw a line and color a picture, so the talent is in there.. there is potential.. it is up to you to make sure you show yourself in your own light instead of someone else's :)

I've my own style, i've got a "little" bit of dragonball in one of my characters (two if you separate his two morphs), but other than that i think i got my own style pretty good... Not with a tablet, but with pen tool. I suck at tablets...

Giant muscular female hermaphrodites are not freaks. You're just jealous because their penises is bigger.

Yup, I meant to write it that way I was about to say bro...:giggle:

When you draw anime, you don't show that you know how to draw.. no, you don't.. you show that you CAN USE A STYLE VERY WELL. But you're not showing yourself in it.. you're not being you. Very good point bro, and that's just not with anime. It can be with any style. Artists try to perfect the style, not the foundation or fundamentals of drafting. Myself included because I was like that before art school...but as I am learning how to draw now, it's not about style. It's about how fundamentally sound you are in your drafting skills. And not every anime artist, Sonic artist, or superhero artist, is fundamentally sound. If they were, we would see more of their style and understanding from their discoveries and studying.

Because Anime, I'm just really sick and tired of seeing it everywhere, stealing talent like cigarette steals health. Now that's a quote right there! :O I remember trying to do anime in high school...but it never stuck. Glad it didn't, otherwise I wouldn't be able to try exploring things that are the unknown. *nods* But yeah, it's everywhere bro because it's comfortable and recognizable. My brother made an excellent point about Wall-E, that the movie based on the theme of curiosity. Instead of staying in the comfort zone and doing the same thing over and over, the characters go out of their comfort zone to see what's it like. And that's how we learn as artists: If we get out of our comfort zone, explore, and discover, we can bring in new things that we've never tried before. Which is why I'm going after anatomy so I can bring in new things that I never knew about the human body. :D

Enjoy your creativity. Thanks bro! I will do that. You do the same too! ;) I know you have in the past, continue to do so in the present and the future. :)

I'm sarcastic due to the overdose of reality.

Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity. - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 1963 (from Strength to Love)
This reminds me of when I first started in my drawing classes over at Metro. I was still in the "faux manga-ka" stage I was in since high school. Wanda Ewing, my instructor there and once more in Life Drawing when I started going to UNO, gave me the "you're good artist, but if I see anymore anime figures in your sketch journal, I'm gonna have to start deducting points" ultimatum. Since then, I've been less anime-ish and more towards western cartoon with a better understanding of anatomy.

While we're on the subject of anime artists that are not stereotypically anime, there's also Chica Umino of "Honey and Clover". Her style of drawing is very loose (cartoony when characters are over-emotional, more realistic when the mood's a bit more somber). It's more prominent in the manga than in the anime.
